Moving to self-sustaining power as Ellard goes Solar.

Updated: Jun 13, 2023

Why are we moving to Solar power?

In 2021, Ellard had the idea to not only reduce our reliance on the National grid but to also further decrease our carbon footprint. Therefore we made the decision to start the solar roof project. From a business point of view, this project will reduce our risk exposure to the inevitable rise in energy costs, however, the true value in it lies in moving to a completely renewable energy source.

Previously to this, we had already made great strides towards green energy, by switching both our gas and electricity to 100% renewable sources. This resulted in us saving an estimated 70 tonnes of C02E, however, our scope three emissions related to the transmission of grid electricity still remained, equating to almost 40 tonnes of C02E. There was still more that we could do.

The process and what we can expect.

After making the decision to move to our own self-sustaining solar energy, we started working with our landlord and began the process. Throughout this, we have worked closely with Electricity Northwest and the Green Economy, as they aided in finding a suitable solar partner. Both have been crucial in finding the right partner to plan and execute the installation of the panels.

We started working with the team at Perfect Sense Energy, and they have designed a system that will deliver optimal energy. The project consists of 332 solar panels that will generate approximately 136 kWp. With this, we can expect the panels to provide between 50% and 60% of our electricity consumption. With the help of Perfect Sense Energy, the move to solar energy was seamless, their team was dedicated to providing the best possible service throughout the entire process. We spoke to John Reynolds, the Project Manager, about his experience throughout this project:

"Collaborating with Ellard on this solar panel project has been both challenging and rewarding. Their dedication to embracing renewable energy solutions and their active involvement throughout the process has made it easy to project manage the solar installation. Seeing our solar panels power Ellard's site is a testament to the positive change we can achieve when organisations come together with a shared vision for a sustainable future." - John Reynolds, Project Manager

Why Solar energy?

By embracing solar power, we can significantly reduce our carbon footprint and enjoy a wide range of benefits. These benefits include a decrease in our reliance on imported resources, substantial cost savings, and reduced dependence on the national grid. Overall, solar energy is an excellent choice for anyone looking to make a positive impact on the environment while also enjoying the many other benefits of renewable energy.

Renewable energy is the future and it was a pleasure working with so many companies of like-minded teams. Each person throughout this process has been vital in helping Ellard move to self-sustaining power, we spoke with Gary Brandwood, Managing Director of Perfect Sense Energy about our commitment to sustainability:

"Working with Ellard has been a great experience for Perfect Sense Energy after we were invited to tender by the Green Economy to design, supply and install a suitable solar PV system for Ellard’s site in Wythenshawe. Ellard’s commitment to sustainability and willingness to invest in solar energy showcases their forward-thinking approach to benefit people, profit and the planet. It has been a privilege to work with Ellard and their landlord, knowing that together we are making a positive impact on the environment."

- Gary Brandwood, Managing Director

Green Economy was an excellent resource for our project. Their knowledge and expertise in solar energy was instrumental in guiding us through the entire process.

“It has been a pleasure to work with the team at Ellard and support them in their net zero journey; taking on decarbonisation for the organisation is a huge task but they’ve faced it head-on and have asked for support and guidance along the way which I’m proud to have been part of. I wish them all the best on their sustainability journey and can’t wait to see what’s next!” - Vicky Wilding, Senior Business Advisor
