Matter Technology is Changing the Smart Home: What does this mean for motorised blinds?
As smart homes become increasingly connected, Matter is helping bring different devices and ecosystems together. But what does this mean for the motorised blinds industry?

From smart lighting and heating to security systems and automated blinds, connected technology is becoming an increasingly familiar part of modern homes. Yet, as the number of smart home products on the market grows, so does the challenge of getting devices from different manufacturers to work together.
This is where Matter comes in.
What is Matter?

Matter is a smart home connectivity standard developed by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA), an organisation made up of companies, such as Apple, Amazon, Google and Samsung, working to improve connectivity between smart home devices.
Its purpose is to help compatible products from different manufacturers communicate using a common standard. Rather than each device relying solely on its own ecosystem, hub and app, Matter is designed to make it easier for supported products to integrate with compatible smart home platforms.
For consumers, this can mean greater flexibility when choosing smart home products, without having to base every purchase around a single manufacturer's ecosystem.
For manufacturers and installers, it represents an opportunity to simplify how compatible devices are integrated into connected homes.
How does Matter work?

Think of Matter as a universal language for smart home devices. It allows compatible products from different manufacturers to communicate using the same set of rules, making it easier to connect and control them through supported smart home systems such as Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa and Samsung SmartThings.
But how do these devices communicate?
That's where technologies like Wi-Fi and Thread come in. While Matter provides the common language, Wi-Fi and Thread provide the networks that carry the information between devices.
Thread is particularly suited to smart home products because it uses very little power and creates a wireless mesh network. This means compatible Thread devices can pass information between one another, helping extend network coverage and improve reliability.
For battery-operated products such as motorised blinds, Thread offers an energy-efficient way to connect to the wider smart home, while Matter enables compatibility with supported smart home ecosystems.
What does Matter mean for motorised blinds?
As smart home technology develops, motorised blinds have an opportunity to become a more integrated part of the connected home.
Imagine blinds operating alongside compatible lighting, heating or other smart devices as part of a wider home automation routine. Rather than treating window coverings as a standalone system, homeowners can increasingly consider how they fit into their overall smart home setup.
For blind manufacturers and installers, this shift creates new opportunities to offer products that meet changing customer expectations around convenience, connectivity and control.
It also makes understanding smart home standards increasingly important when considering the technology behind the next generation of motorised window coverings.
Looking ahead: Matter at Ellard
The future of smart homes is connected, and motorised blinds are no exception. As Matter continues to shape the way devices work together, we're gearing up to bring this technology to our customers.

Coming in the New Year, Ellard will be introducing a new Matter-enabled blind motor and hub, opening new possibilities for connected window coverings. Combining the convenience of motorised blinds with the potential of Matter technology, this new addition to our range represents an exciting step forward in how we help our customers meet the growing demand for smarter, more connected homes.
We're looking forward to sharing more details over the coming months.
